We're Back!!!

We are back!!!

It's definitely been an interesting experiencing re-experiencing America and American culture. I hadn't realized how at home i felt in the Philippines. It was crazy, and chaotic and loud, and friendly, and strangely comforting. I seriously miss the friends that i met there. But i am happy for the experiences that i had over there. God has given me a real sense of peace about his constant love for me and about how he will care for me in the future. I need not worry about food or clothes or water or anything, He is there for me and watching out for me. I always knew this is my head, but now i know it in my heart.

Thank you Everyone for the experience of a life time. Thank you Nolan and Jared for Guiding me and for some much-needed tough love. Thank you supporters, both financially and spiritually.

Its been amazing. Thanks.

KOREA AGAIN!!!

HEy all

we are now nearing the end of our 12 layover in korea and it wasnt as bad as expected. We got to go on a tour of the city and see a palace and the average life of a old school korean museum. ONe of the guys in our group alspo is here for 1 day getting a rating appraoval for the AVATAR MOVIE!!!!! i def screamed super loud and embarressing when i heard this. haha. aubrey i hope you are reading this.

The past week we've helped out at habitat for humanity, went to Pagsanhan Falls (beautiful), took a few days debrief at the beach (amazing), went splunking (the fish attacked me), Got caught in REDICULOUS traffic, said some hard goodbyes, slept on some airport benches, and explored Seoul. its been fun!

But.. we do terribly miss you all and are ready to be amongst friends and family. But as we adjust to the time change, and the culture shock (hopefully not too shocking), Lwt us not forget the great works that GOd has done in us this trip.

THank you all for your support and we look forward to dialoging with you!!!

One more week

I am homesick. Not that things havent been amazing, but I just miss my friends and family. Its a good thing that my only time to REALLY think about it is at night, and then Im tired so it doesnt last long before I sleep.

I got into a cake frosting fight today at the San Buena church 3 yr anniversary with about 50 kids....I lost....hard. But it was fun.

Cynthia just told me that we havent explained about our last day at the birthing clinic/baby home. We spent a lot of time in the clinic. We sat through a class, and then helped do pregnancy checkups!!! Yay!!! It was amazingggggggg. We used monitors to find the baby heartbeats and count them, then we poked around to figure out how the baby was positioned. It never ceases to amaze me how welcoming Filipinos are. Here we are...3 white girls who have never done anything like that, poking their babies and stuff, never to see these women again, and they just let us. I dont know if I would be that nice. It was amazing amazing amazing. I would love to be involved with pre-natal care somehow in my future. Yes please.

P.S. Filipino kids are NUTS.

Love Katie

katie wants to blog.

But Nolan will instead. Today we picked up trash. Well moreover we scooped up scum for an hour. Honestly it is not like it made much of a difference. I mean the rain, and people dropping trash everywhere will eventually leave a mess of sewage and trash in the gutters of the street in a matter of a few days. It will all come back since we basically just threw all the trash and scum onto the dirt off of the road. I often wonder if our presence here in Manila will truly make much of an impact. A lot of it is perspective. We have come to serve and to bless these people. Their standard of living not withstanding with American standards. We have to understand that this is the way they live. Of course improvements can be made but should we truly expect them to be like us? Maybe us helping them pick up trash even if it was only for an hour was better than doing nothing. Critics will often scoff at the lack of effort, but I say differently. I would say at least we tried, at least we put our best foot in. Besides were not actually done yet, in a few hours, were going to help them hand out shoe boxes filled with toys and gifts.

My experience here is not finished but yet I have learned already so much about poverty, and the economics of it. Pastor Rick told me that he that in all his years of serving squatter communities in Manila, he has concluded that nobody wants to be poor. So with our wealth let us not be buried in guilt but use our blessings from God to bless others. I had the ability to come to this place for the second time. Abandoning pretense of gathering suitable income and choosing the difficult task of leadership and service, I have found a strange but silent grace in walking after God instead of myself.

Our team has one week left, see how it goes...

For I have seen the Kingdom, in the slums, in the streets, in the homes of the believers, in the hope of a boys heart, in the words of one who will not fall under the pressure of the world.

Sat, Aug 8, 2009 New Updateizzle!

Hey Family & Friends!

Since the last update on Tuesday, we have been quite busy, and there is much to report to you all as it is already halfway through Saturday here. While the girls were at the baby clinic for 2 1/2 days, the boys (Jared, Nolan, Matt) were at the Children's Garden, a home for out of school boys from age 13 to 20.

There were about 17 boys while we stayed overnight each night at the home. The first day was a bit rough as the boys were very nervous to speak english to us at first, as they almost always are, and we didn't quite know exactly what we were doing there at the home. The first thing we tackled was building and painting a ping pong table for the boys under the direction of Pastor Buddy (sp?) who was one of the directors of the boys home. That night I, matthew, got a very terrible headache and ended up very very hot, throwing up that night, and having very erraneous excretions from my bottomportion.

Jared and Nolan meanwhile did dance practice with the boys, which they do everyday in order to prepare for performances and contests that they enter. There were a few boys who played guitar, and even others who played chess, but the one thing they all had in common was playing basketball on a very uneven gravelly pavement like surface with rocks and dirt and potholes. barefoot of course.

As the days went on at the boys home, we played lots of chess (losing almost everytime to this very talented guy Presley, who actually works each day when he's not in classes to support his 8 or so siblings going to school.) We also got to jam on the guitar with the boys, dance some more, and just get to talk and hang out.

Almost everyday the boys go to school, one jeepney ride away, and take classes on Math, other subjects, English, and Martial Arts, the last two of which we got to join with them on tuesday.

KARATE WAS INTENSE! OOSE!

That's the sound we were supposed to respond with when the Martial Arts Master, Pastor Bong shouted out Kill! or other commands.

The stretching and warmup excercises alone were enough to make all three of us guys laugh in despair and weep at our insufficencies. After joining the previously out-of-school youth while they trained and practiced new moves, we watched them spar. After class, Pastor Bong, the super Amazing Martial Arts Master shared with us his incredible testimony, which consisted of him getting shot five times. Amazing! What a strong masculine influence for these boys! You could tell that they really respected Him and his teaching.

Most of the meals at the boys home consisted of rice, pb&j's, i think they thought we liked them? and some sort of meat dish, which usually consisted of fish. I think all three of us ate fish heads, and that same night after leading devotions with the boys, we all ate balut, which is like the Filipino national dish or something which is half developed chicken cooked inside it's egg and when you're given it you just crack open the egg and eat a baby chicken, beak, brain, bones, feathers and all! but don't worry it's pretty soft! and tastes like chicken/egg!

In talking to one of the Pastors for a while who had came by the boys home, it was very encouraging to see how helpful and willing different people in the community were to invest their time and resources to the boys home which ran off of donations and quite commonly didn't know where the next meal was going to come from. It was also extremely encouraging to realize that these very neat, disciplined, respectful Christian boys who we had been living with for the last couple days only a year previously, if not less for a lot of them, were wild teens who lived on the streets and got into whatever trouble you can think of and had no idea who Christ was or if they did, what He had done for them on the Cross.

The final day, Wednesday, Maria brought the girls by after picking them up from the baby clinic so they could see what the boys home was all about, and we soon departed from the Children's Garden after taking many pictures and videotaping an awesome song that the boys had written and performed for us.

After leaving the boys home, we drove to Faith Academy, the missionary kid-school where Michael and Lauren, two of the Bell's children currently attend school, and have done so since they moved to the Philippines. It is a massive private school located up in the hills above Manila with incredible views of the city! Because of donations, in the last few years the campus has gone through many remarkable renovations and new projects of which Maria informed us about during our lengthy private tour. We spotted her son Michael, who we've gotten to know and love very much playing indoor soccer with some of his teammates, and then went on to their AWESOME indoor (ish) playground. This is the location where Jared and Nolan stayed when they came in 2005 during their high school missions trip here.

The school was incredibly blessed, and even without knowing too much about the faculty and staff, and only knowing about the student population from Michael and Lauren, i fell in love immediately and Dana and i promised each other we'd come back and teach there when we get older!! -a hope shared by the Bells' two kids who are currently enrolled, to come back and teach at their alma mater.

That wednesday night we spent getting plenty of rest, and catching up with the girls and getting to hear about what not only they, but also the Bells had been up to for the last few days!

It was just really cool and informing to get to know what and where the rest of the Bells' family did for a living (studying), and get to see their stomping grounds. Faith Academy was also the place where my grandfather taught classes back when my Grandparents were missionaries to Manila, and where my aunt took classes when she was just a young kiddo! NEAT!

It was truly a blessing to get to see more of the Philippines in the provincial area this time around, Antipolo, and get to know more of what life and following Christ is like for these quite impoverished, but still incredibly joyful and encouraging Filipinos!

Nolan is going to catch you up with the rest of our activities up until now, starting with having the opportunity to meet a man who has been at Faith for over 50 years, who brought Jared's grandfather to Christ, and knew my grandparents as well! Tine Hardeman!

Love Matthew!

p.s. He says Hello G&G Cox!

UPDATE!!!

Sorry we havnt updated this in a while. its been crazy busy. its GO GO GO all day then dinner and asleep by 9:30 when we get home :D
So we have done alot in the past week. (Sorry for the length but i want to mention everything)

Wednesday and Thursday: We helped teach the kids at Bright Lights; which is a school for children who have been forced out of normal school due to financial and other reasons. We listened to Tagolo and tried to learned tagolo but had to still speak in english. Its funny how much body language and hand signals comes in to play in communicating cross-culturally. Thursday also, Rick Bell (our host) decided it would be good for us to just drop us off outside his house and we had to find our way to the school.... yeah. it was super hott. we ended up walking to Junction, which is a major intersection, and then hopping on a jeepney for there but it was still like a 20 min walk.
Also Thursday we learned all about riding on jeepneys and the marketplace actually from the Bright lights students. Then those students took us by jeepney to a local mall where we tried HALO HALO (mix mix) which is like coconut milk, fruit, veggies and shaved ice. Nolan, jared and i dont like it. Katie and Dana thought it was ok, and im not sure about matt.
Friday: we painted the church in the Squatter Community of San Buena. Alot of the Bright lights students come from this community, and it is very very very poor. The whole scene looked like one of those compassion commercial; it was surreal to me. Some of the children helped paint this church building (no bigger than maybe 30 feet by 15 feet) and it was HOTT!! you seriously have to carry around a sweat rag and no one looks at you weird for doing it. Dana ended up getting a little heat sick, so she went early but the rest of us were there from like 8am-4/5pm.
Later that night we host a FINDING NEMO movie night for the children of San Buena and there were maybe 150-200 of them. it was in english but it didnt matter. They laughed and mauled us when we had popcorn and fell asleep in our laps. Dana Gave a message about Gods love and how he seeks after us (via translator) and she did very well.
Saturday: We had a sort of Rest day/not really. We ended up going out with the churchs youth group to a water park called manilla east. the funny thing was this was the only day so far that it had actually decided to seriously rain ;). But it was fun to just swim in the rain and get to the know the youth. there was a wave pool and it was AWESOME.
Later that night we had the youth over for a pizza and message/discussion. The pizza was round table and the messages were good. katie, nolan and i gave a brief message and then broke into small discussion group to talk about the ways that God is working in their lives. it went very well.
Sunday: We went to the Cells Alive church, which is where the school is and Rick Bell is Co-Pastor. Nolan and Matt played a song, dana gave her testimony and katie, Jared and I helped in the sunday School. We then rode by jeepney. solo, to the mall and had filipino fast food at a place called Chowking. Then we went back to the church for YOUTH ALIVE, the churches youth group. We played a game called Bear, hunter, girl. its kinda like rock, paper, scissors meets tag. but that was super fun. and then katie gave her testimony and jared preached. it was amazing. for worship we actually sang like Hillsong, so we knew all the words, which was cool. Nolan got his hair cut after (it was super long), now it is super short and he looks like he did when they came to the philippines the first time :D
Monday-Tuesday/today: The girls and boys split up. it was kinda sadd. we had all just spent so much time together. Us girls went to a Baby adoption home/birthing center, and the boys went to a boys childrens home. The girls are staying at the Bells still (hence where i am writing this) but the boys are at the home till wednesday afternoon, so we shall see them tomorrow. From here on out in this entry it will be just about the girls, since all we know about the guys via text is that they are doing good.
The baby home is amazing. the kids are sooo cute. there are two babys: jm(john-michael) and Simon. Then a few 1-2 year olds named: Diane,Roi, Harry, Calvin. then there is the cutest little girl named Bernadette who is 3. then there are a few 4 year old named: Senon, and the twins Dennis and Ray. They are all so cute. dennis punched my in the lip though haha. Ray is very happy. Senon is incredable loveable and was the first child i got to know because i carried him on a little walk(he also has serible palsey and has trouble walking). Bernadette is ...just cute. seriously. harry and Roi just waddle. Calvin is a trouble maker. Diane is super shy and will barely play with us. Jm has the weirdest most infectious laugh, and simon has a big open smile, but also suffers from a extreme club foot and must where a cast.
Funny story. We got super lost on the way to the home today. we took the wrong jeepney and ended up in the backroads of Tai Tai for like an hour. When we got to a random place i recongnized we just walked to the home. it was like 2 miles uphill. took us forever. in some rain. but we did it. CAUSE WE ARE AWESOME. but everyone is making fun of us now and we have many cell numbers to call in case we get lost again :D

We are drinking plenty of water, but are not really in need of sunscreen since its monsoon season. It randomly rains and rain hards and i love it. We havnt got ripped off yet.we got lost, but found our way with little/no help. We havnt had any major fights, nolan got his hair cut, we communed with some youth, got soaked, got sweaty, and we are having an AMAZING TIME!!!
Peace out and we will try to be more regular in our updates.

Cynthia

ps. We have some sample pictures up but i havnt figured out how yet on this site so they are on our facebook page http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=58848963916

A Whole New World

So, we are finally here! Honestly, right before I left, I was really sad to leave home and wasnt looking foward to the trip. Then, as soon as I met up with my team, I was so excited to go on this journey. Our traveling went as best as it could. The first flight had minimal turbulence but the second flight was a liiitle scary, at least for me. When we arrived, a man working at the airport called my name and said that they didnt see one of our pieces of baggage! I said a little prayer and luckily, all our stuff was there.
As soon as I met the Bells, I knew they were kindreds. It has only been two days and Ive already learned so much about them and Australia. They have already given me life advice that I can take back with me. We went to TGI Fridays (yes, our first real Filipino restaurant) and it was quite an experience. Michael, their 15 year old son, works there and was able to serve us.
My stomach felt quite precarious when I first arrived, but now it feels pretty normal. Even though it is very humid outside, we are lucky to have fans in the house and AC at night. We have mostly eaten Westernized food. So thus far, things havent been too uncomfortable for us but we have only been here a few days. In the future, we know we will probably have to eat some different things and be put in situations we arent sure about- but Im so excited!
Thank you so much for all the support everyone has blessed us with. Please continue to pray for our team and Manila. We are just about to leave to go to Bright Lights school and help teach English.

Dana
